Mid 1700s colonial cauldron/kettle, sweet dandy button, and more colonial relics!

Hello! I went out early today with my dad and had a few finds. Started out right off the bat with a silvered rosette. Then I got a huge dandy button, ( second one of this style from this site). However, dad wasn't really digging as he was fielding phone calls for the business. So I went on digging, and pretty soon I got this 80s signal, and realized it was pretty deep. When I finally felt the target I bought it was a complete bowl or something ( and that the real target was beneath it) but as I pulled on it I realized it was round and iron. To my surprise I pulled out an Almost intact colonial three legged kettle! After that it really slowed down, a few buttons, a musketball, some lead, etc but nothing spectacular. I did get what's proabbly a piece of horse tack, but it looks like the holy grail which I found amusing. Dad dug a but towards the end but just got a piece of escutcheon plate. The other piece was from last hunt, it was hiding in the pouch. Hh everyone!

. HECK OF A FIND . I HAVE A LEG TO ONE BUT COULD NOT FIND THE REST. YOU ALL GOT SOME NEAT 1700S RELICS. WHEN THE KETTLE GETS CLEANED POST IT AGAIN SO I CANT GET A BETTER PIC AT WHAT I AM LOOKING AT.

The 'Holy Grail' is a broken horse leather decor, circa late 18th C.

That mini-kettle is a great find! I frequently recover pieces from large colonial iron pots, but have never dug an intact one. The largest section I've found still comprises less than 1/2 of a complete pot (see below). Yours should clean up nicely in the electrolysis tank, and make a very nice looking display piece.

hank you! I dug this at a spot near charleston SC that I've been working, littered with artifacts, found 200 pipe stems digging out a pit! It'll get cleaned up when I head back to PA in August along with the hoes and hand irons I've been digging there. HH!

That cast iron kettle looks like an old glue or tar pot, or could have been used for melting lead. I have a somewhat newer 3-legged one of the same size which is very useful for processing shooting-range lead, but was bought with a bunch of tar and an ancient brush solidified inside. had to use a good amount of solvents to clean it up. Nice finds!

Never seen one intact like that.
Ask Bill Va. how to "bring it back" and preserve.

Thanks for posting this thread. It reminded me of something I found a while back that has been sitting in a junk bucket now for a while. Found on a property that had a Colonial-era house on it.

You can see the seam where it was cast. So I presume this is a fragment of a Colonial kettle?? Ideas on preserving now that I know what it is?
