Surface find yesterday on a sandy slope that has been eroded by recent rains. Found in an area with a range of 20th century ceramic and glass fragments. Given the lack of rust I'm thinking it may be a more contemporary steel square nail rather than something more historic from the 1800s when square nails were in great use.

Thoughts?

Three White's, one Fisher and a Minelab.....I'm beginning to wonder if I am a metal detectorist .....or a collector of metal detectors?

My thoughts are that you have found a square nail. It appears to be just over four centimeters in length. It also shows evidence of being just about one half centimeter wide as measured at the presumed striking surface. I'm going out on a limb and presuming it is made of metal.

To conclude, my best guess is that you Are Correct..... It's a square nail !
