Musket Part (?) And Draped Bust LC

Went for a quick late day hunt the other day at an 19th century farm and dug what I think might be a side plate for an early musket. It measures about 6"long and is about 3/4" at its widest point. The end is bent and it is stamped with either a backwards N and C from one angle, but what could be US if looking from another angle. Any help would be appreciated. The only other keeper was a holed 180_ draped bust LC.

Yeap looks like a gun part, no good with which type though, but I'm sure your get your answer soon.

It's the side plate for a 2nd model Brown Bess, excellent save!

Wow someone really wanted to put a hole in that beautiful DBLC. I think the hole gives it ten times the character, so congrats!

Great job on the complete side plate. I got one a little while ago but I'm not sure exactly what type or date for sure. Brown bess style i think also...

Thanks for the info and pictures KIDDO. Mine looks just like the one you found except that the screw holes on yours are recessed and mine are just flat.

It's definitely a 2nd model Brown Bess side plate, the 1st model has the same profile, but has a rounded surface (as shown in the picture) and the 2nd model is flat. The 3rd model lost the tail circa 1790, so yours is from the end of the French and Indian War through the Revolutionary War. As you can tell by my name, I'm an antique gun guy. [emoji6]

Thanks for your expertise and information Fullstock. It's nice to have the knowledge of people like you on this website. This is indeed a very historical find for me. It was getting dark on me when I dug it, but I will be going back to the site and look for more of the gun. Thanks again. Bill
