Yesterday's sifting adventure, at colonial Tavern.

Well after being pushed by Bill.D
For a few months, i final tried my hand at sifting. Only dug a few test holes. Definitely not something you do in 90plus weather!! Lol
I believe iam going to love it when iam not passing out from the heat.
My favorite find of the day is this silver cuff button, nice little design on it. Got some nice musket balls and a cool pewter spoon. Never seen one with this handle..
The Barber quarter I found detecting before I started sifting.
Thanks for looking, and thanks Bill for all your help.
George

Sifting hey? That sounds very interesting, and you got some nice results. I might have to try that sometime. How old do you figure the little silver button is? Looks old.

Good looking barber too, always great finding a Barber quarter!

Mwahaha! Can't wait!

I have a couple of spots where the grass is too long to detect, mowing isn't feasible, but sifting might be an option. Very cool.

Glad you finally broke the ice George. Sounds like you had fun even if it wasn't as productive as you were hoping. Did any pottery or glass turn up in the sifter?

Yes. Just small pieces of white and blue pottery shards. And some small thick clear glass.

Nice finds, Sweet looking barber!!

Sifting? I've done it in old bottle dumps, how's it work? How do you pick a spot to sift?

Your button is tombac George. And it is mid to late 18th century. Have found quite a few like it with that same design. Tombac holds up pretty well in the ground and keeps its silvery color. I am going to get my sifter into the spot here I was just at later this fall when they move the cattle out for the winter.

You got some nice items there! Am thinking about doing some sifting at my local historical society homestead from the early 1700s....not much luck detecting there as I think people in the 70s and 80s may have snuck on the property with detectors without permission :censored: :violent1: but I'm sure there is much to be found deeper down. Do you have any good plans for a sifter? I built one a few years back with steel Simpson corner brackets, screws, and 2x6's....but I know there are some fancy hinged ones out there.

I actually have a 1700s tavern in mind for the same treatment . It has about 500 bushels of freshwater clam shells on the bank behind it with all sorts of pottery pieces and an unimaginable amount of small pieces of metal . You have inspired me now :laughing7: A sifting we will go , a sifting we will go . Hi ho the tavern oh, a sifting we will go :headbang:

That's awesome George. I'm actually in-process of building a sifter myself. I'm glad to hear you're "digging" the sifter;)
