First 1800's silver and first seated is a 1849 Half Dime. Some colonial stuff too

Went to an old school in another town tonight. That didn't pan out as it has most likely been pounded over the years. Soil was very dry too.

So I went too you guessed it, the Pomander site, for an hour before dark. Very few signals but still finding great stuff. Started out with a 1917 wheat. Then got the brass? nail, round ball, and a smallest crotal bell I have seen. With very little light left I dug the seated half dime. It's pretty worn and I killed the back side with the digger but don't care because I now have my first 1800's silver and my first seated.

That back side don't matter. You have the important side clean and ready for display. Great find- I've found only one half dime and it's an 1854, and wayy more worn.

Cheers Steve

Nice going on the first, liking the little crotal bell.

I have to remind myself, dig wide and deep any other way it seems that I can carve them up pretty good.

I always tend to dig small plugs. Don't know why. I just hope I don't carve up that bust silver that's waiting for me here

Hard to believe I dug a cob before I got my first seated. You probably got drawers full of seated coins

Three White's, one Fisher and a Minelab.....I'm beginning to wonder if I am a metal detectorist .....or a collector of metal detectors?

I'm thinking that maybe you are like me. I try hard to do very little damage to the turf, especially when digging a permission site on someone's lawn. But, a wider horseshoe plug folded back and watered will minimize damage to both turf and target. I'm with pepperj, I have to try and remember....

Are you near the Coast? Some of those bronze nails were used on old ships.

congrats on the half dime, on my list of must haves!, who cares about the scratch, a scratched half dime is better than no half dime right?

great hunt!

Congrats on your first 1800's silver. That's a nice old coin to get on the board with. Also like the crotal bell.

That may not be the prettiest seated half dime I've ever seen, but a seated half dime, is a seated half dime, is a seated half dime....... Way to go! Nice way to break into 1800's silver.

You're probably right. Lots of maritime history nearby.
