Civil War R.T Kelly "hats" token 1863, Draped bust Large cent, silver...

Hit a spot that has a building dating to 1784. The earliest I have found before this large cent was a Hibernia Copper from 1823. I wish I could get a date but all I can see is a 17. Also got a pretty cool civil war store token. I googled the details and its supposedly rare...dunno. Also a silver to round things out. I like tokens. They can really give up some history how they traveled. Nice hunt!

These tokens are very rich in history indeed. Here's a blip of information for those curious about civil war tokens:

Civil War tokens are token coins that were privately minted and distributed in the United States between 1861 and 1864. They were used mainly in the Northeast and Midwest. The widespread use of the tokens was a result of the scarcity of government-issued cents during the Civil War.

Civil War tokens became illegal after the United States Congress passed a law on April 22, 1864 prohibiting the issue of any one or two-cent coins, tokens or devices for use as currency. On June 8, 1864 an additional law was passed that forbade all private coinage.[1]

Civil War tokens are divided into three types—store cards, patriotic tokens, and sutler tokens. All three types were utilized as currency, and are differentiated by their designs. The collectible value of the tokens is determined chiefly by their rarity.

Thx man. Tokens can often say a lot more than a plain old coin. This site has turned up some strange finds and two tokens, the other being an 1837 hard times LC token. If they could only talk right?
