Huge spill of Newfoundland Large Cents and Silver Spoon...

Hi everyone!

I was experiencing somewhat of a drought lately but the month of October has been great! A couple of days ago I discovered a new site which seems very promising indeed! The first day I recovered two Canadian Large Cents dated 1887 and 1912 along with 6 Newfoundland Large Cents dated 1896, 1909, 1920, 1913, 1907 and a 1941 small cent. Today I returned and found 6 more Newfoundland Large Cents dated 1904, 1913, and 4 dated 1917 along with a British 1902 Penny...The icing on the cake was a silver spoon from the early 1800s..It appears Georgian.. Here are some pics! Wish there had been silver coins there but I'm not complaining..

Hi Rick! I've watched many of your Youtube videos and really enjoyed them...I've been detecting for about 20 years....I was detecting that site for only a couple of hours each day because of other commitments...but a little disappointed there wasn't any silver coins to be found...It is a huge area to hunt, so hopefully I will get a whole day free to search it again...Had a nice feast on some wild blueberries...Some tasty! lol!

THANKS, I try to keep them fast paced, as I have a short attention span myself, and I don't like videos myself that have too much intro, or linger too long on one find.

Anyway with only 4 hours on that site, and it being "huge" I bet there more coinage there for you...includung some Silver.

on your detector ? How did you discover (research) this site ? Are any of the large cents key dates ? and finally ,
Any chance the monogram on the Silver spoon can be traced to the history of the site ?
(I would put a beautiful polish on that spoon and eat my oatmeal with it every morning !)

Thanks Argentium...To answer your questions...The Victorian Newfoundland Large Cents are made of bronze and come up in the zinc penny as an id...On my CZ5, it comes up as square pulltab so I always dig those...From 1904 the Large Cents come up close to the silver range or like you said, in the quarter area because it was changed to copper...Newfoundlands coins were made only when needed or when the demand was high for coins...For example, Newfoundland Large cents from 1896 were minted in 1904, then in 1907, 1909, then 1913, 1917, 1919 and then there was a gap of 10 years when they were produced again in 1929, then finally in 1936...So they were minted when coins were needed and not on a yearly basis..I have found every Newfoundland penny made from 1865 to 1947 except for 1885 and 1888 which seems to be very rare..The 1946 Newfoundland silver 5 cents (fishscale) is very rare since only 2,500 were minted!!! If a US coin had that kind of mintage, it would be worth a fortune! Most of these coins were found in a 10ft by 10ft square area..and the spoon was in there with it..

I do my homework and search for these sites...The area where I live, ironically named Spaniards Bay was frequented by pirates back in the 1600s...

I will try to clean that spoon using the tin foil in hot water with salt and baking soda to see how it will work...I am going to check out that monogram..Don't worry, I will be eating my oatmeal with that spoon!!

Here is a pic of a grave in my area and there is an ACTUAL pirate graveyard only minutes from where I live...Only 1 of 2 in North America...The other is in the Caribbean..We have a rich history..

That's actually not a pirate grave. I live directly across the street on bennets Lane where that grave is located in harbour grace. It's actually a Catholic Grave yard and that's a Masonic grave stone. The symbols of the lamb on the side cross and the skull and cross bones are indicative to Masonic symbolisms. That grave dates much later than 1800. In fact it's closer to 1850 if anything. Pirates weren't around then.

I think your spoon may be London 1814. There is no city mark on yours but that happens sometimes.

Although its missing its assayers mark (maybe a silversmith tax dodge or a sloppy assayer), its London. 1814.
