I Just Dug Up The Oldest Dog License I've Ever Seen!

In many years of metal detecting I've dug up a lot of dog tags / licenses, but never one as old as the one I found today! My previous record for
a dog tag was 1921, today the one I dug was dated 1881! I wonder if this one is a rare find? Also dug up 6 wheaties a a 1947 Rosie dime. Clad was
about $6.00. Two different parks were hunted today, I've hunted both areas before. It's amazing what you miss.....

Very cool tag! How did you clean it?

Just lightly scrubbed it with a wet green scratch pad and some liquid hand soap. I've done this with several similar type relics.

That's one sweeeet looking tag considering the date, congratulations!
The oldest tag reported from San Francisco was 1878, when Dr William Bone wrote the book; US DOG LICENSE TAGS.
I checked his "PRE 1900 DOG LICENSE TAGS" book also and your tag wasn't listed in either book, so it could be the first found!
Congrats again and be sure to contact "odd coins" as "word talker" suggested.

That's a really cool find. I'm going to research them a bit, but this could very well be a BANNER find.

I right there with you. I'm into the history but need to look up references. It could quite well be banner.

I have seen an 1888 and I found this 1890 last year but yours is the oldest I have ever seen and I was shocked to see they even issued these before the turn of the century. Huge congrats, you just rewrote the book! :-D

I agree with everyone else. Find of the day was that wonderful dog license tag -- issued 25 years before the Great Earthquake.
