I Just Dug Up The Oldest Dog License I've Ever Seen!

In many years of metal detecting I've dug up a lot of dog tags / licenses, but never one as old as the one I found today! My previous record for
a dog tag was 1921, today the one I dug was dated 1881! I wonder if this one is a rare find? Also dug up 6 wheaties a a 1947 Rosie dime. Clad was
about $6.00. Two different parks were hunted today, I've hunted both areas before. It's amazing what you miss.....

Awesome find!!! The oldest I've seen dug was from 1874 in Maryland... but this is the nicest and second oldest I've ever seen! I've dug a 1903 and a 1906... so close to the 1800s! Because it was dug in California makes it extra special, before the great fire of San Francisco! What a piece of history! Glad this is up top!

Thanks! It might be the first time that someone on the west coast found an example of something older than that found on the east coast!...:) ...You guys always find better & older coins though....:)
Except when it comes to gold coins, much more numerous in the West.

Ok, now that you've found this lovely old dog tag, here's something for your San Francisco bucket list:

Committee_of_Vigilance_medallion.jpg

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Committee_of_Vigilance

1856 Committee of Vigilance medallion inscribed: "Organized 9th June 1851. Reorganized 14th May 1856. Be Just and Fear Not." The eye symbol was borrowed from Freemasonry, but in its 1856 vigilante context conveyed surveillance as a means of social discipline, not the Masonic meaning of scientific and aesthetic knowledge. Note that Lady Justice is not blindfolded.

Looks like the libs were in control then too!!! It must be some thing in the water out there..
For goodness sake, it's just a dog tag. Now this tired old jibe is forever attached to this fellow's outstanding find. There's a million places for you to post this sort of ridicule...not here.
