My oldest coin to-date was recovered today, a George III penny - no date, but was issued in 1806. Other notable finds were a 1944P war nickel, an 1899 IHP, three wheats (1919, 1925 and 1935), and part to a pewter spoon handle marked 'C. Parker'; Parker joined Perkins in 1860, so this piece would appear to pre-date 1860. George III penny is between 32 and 33 millimeters in diameter and width of rim is 2 millimeters.

A little out of place for your area but a George copper is a George copper! Those turn up around here but has been a while since I've seen one myself. (Issued in 1806 and 07)

It's in pretty rough shape. No lettering visible. ID by design only. Thanks for the dates of 1806 - 1807!

Yeap, only those dates, it was one of the most common minted examples.

Don't know how many years the British coinage stayed in circulation or if it was accepted as payment in the U.S. during the first decade of the 19th century.

Thanks trebleh. The Indian was my last target dug. Thought I'd investigate a short hillside and found it to be not too deep nearing where the hill levels out.

Hey, L-D. Thanks for weighing in. It was a short hunt; had to get to work later that day. Started out sort of slow, just digging too many iffy signals, but did come up with a wheatie or two and the spoon handle. Then came the war nickel. I headed for a big tree near where an old path (gone now) went in 1899 and it was there that the old copper was found. Worked my way back to the truck and I found the IHP within 12 feet of where I was parked!
