Weather in this part of VA has been wet and warm - lot of rain over the past few days so ground is very soft, since all the chores got done and had some time to myself, I headed down to do a little hunting at a neighboring farm that dates back to the 1750's. Stone walls surround the property so started there. Lots of iron, some large flat buttons, some smaller ones, and finally around the old smokehouse foundation, got a solid 85 on the ATP. Pulled a 1787 GEOIII silver shilling at about 4". Spent some time working the foundation and pulled a couple of flat buttons. About to call it a day as I got another 55 on the meter - usually a button and it did look like a gilt button until I got a closer look - 1762 GEOIII gold quarter guinea! I've been detecting for 45 years and have never found a gold coin - I guess "Never give up" applies!:tongue3:

Good lord, where are all these gold coins coming from and why haven't I found one?! Congrats on a stellar find. My banner vote is in as well. I found a brass token version of that coin a couple weeks ago.

WOW. This would have been my second banner vote for a gold coin today, but I see no more gold coins until some relics are found. To me and some others it's still a banner weather it's on top or not. Congrats.

Firstly - WELL DONE

Secondly - more pictures of both sides please? (the shillings in great shape)

Thirdly - I thought you had made a mistake with the 'quarter' bit, never heard of one, checked the book & its the only year they did it, all the rest are the usual 'Half or Third'. So a bit of a premium on that one, worth more than the 'thirds'.

Very high on my wish list - a colonial gold coin. This is a BANNER find without a doubt, no matter what the mods say. Vino has already suggested taking his "modern" gold coin down and replacing it with this colonial gold coin.
If that's what it takes to get it up there, then so be it :laughing7:
My vote is going in now!
