Is the etching recessed? if so it could be a wax seal of some sort rather than a standard brooch.

That is a very good possibility


Show us the other side of that , it would be a very nice wax seal if it is!

Either way it is a fine looking brooch

I looked closer at the backside and it appears there may have been something attached once, it's still a contender for a nice wax seal knowing the carving is recessed

Gorgeous brooch, congratulations. I compare the woman's hairstyle to those of my own relatives in circa 1850-1880's tintype photos, they are quite similar. Sub 8-)
