Went back to the French site yesterday afternoon and worked a small low area that i havent spent much time on and had some great success. Started out digging some lead bullets, hammered lead, and one cut lead square marked with an X. The largest lead ball measures .79 on my calipers. Then i get a screaming shallow signal that i thought was another Denier, but after taking home and cleaning it a bit, it turned out to be a Half Sol. It is about the same diameter as my 9 Denier. Measures 25.7mm on my calipers. It was super crusty, but i managed to pull some details. Unfortunately i cannot make out a date. I wish it was in better shape, but i still think it is an amazing find. This makes Copper #6 from this site. I also dug a neat piece of brass that i believe might be part of a hunting sword or knife. It appears to have a hunter with a dog below him on at least one side. I also think this piece is really detailed and cool, and could be early french colonial. Too bad i dont have the whole piece. The Brass item measures 67mm or 2.69 inches long. Any help with IDs would be appreciated. Thanks

The 1/2 Sol for Paris mint (A at the bottom) only shows two years... 1720, and 1721, so if you play around with some light and angles you might be able to determine which. It's not really that bad.

...or if the Mintmark is AA... 1719 or 1720. So that means if you can prove the 3rd digit in the date is a 1, it has to be 1719 AA.

Looking again it seems obvious it's AA mint.

Thanks for the Info IP. I was just thinking it was a single A, but looking at the pic i kind of think i see a second A. I trust your opinion more than mine. Thanks again. I dropped it back in oil to soak more. I will take out later tonight and play with the light some to see what else i can see. Im about to go do some chores. One for the wife and one for the landowner. It just rained some, so after the chores are finished i plan on hunting a little more. Would the AA also be the Paris Mint?

No, AA is Metz mint. It doesn't surprise me because I've seen many more 1719 and 1720 AA coins than I have Paris mint. At least that is the recollection my brain currently has.

Thanks again IP. So we went back today and did a little work for the landowners. We were able to hunt for a couple hours after working and i got skunked, but my buddy made a nice find. He dug what i think is a seal matrix with a crown and some possible initials inside of it. Im about to post his find in Todays finds. Please take a look and let me know what you think.

A little late to the party, but as I know first hand, french coins hard to come by. Good Job man.
