So not a detecting find but still great. My father in law discovered this in their 1800s farm house barn. I took a pic of one of the dozen buttons (all the same) on the coat that are pristine. Gorgeous! Also discovered the star pin in a little pocket on the coat. Perfect condition again!
The button reads "Mass Militia Volunteer". So cool! ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1459436360.619651.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1459436377.154098.jpg

I know this was an old post/find.... did you ever get any pictures of the entire coat? Would love to see it! What is the update on it's preservation, etc?

Yeah, incredible find! I wonder what happened. I was reading thru hoping to see the pics he said he would post "this week". Maybe he went on to fame and glory and left us behind. He'll get a bunch of "likes" again, hopefully he will see them.

Unbelievable find. Congratulations. I would be quick to get it properly preserved. What a piece of history!

Based on his profile page, he was last active 4-5 months ago so there's hope he'll see this resurrected thread and post that picture of the whole coat for us. I'd still love to see it.

What coat? I haven't seen a coat. It's been a Loonggg time now since the first post. I have seen cuffs cut off uniforms before with the buttons for sale on ebay for instance.

The OP says there's a coat so there's a coat. Please check your inquisitiveness, negativity, (and your coat) at the door. :laughing7:

I'd like to have seen the bottles, too. You always have to wonder what become of folks.

People were advising him on all the steps at preservation, care, etc. Didn't you see the condition it was in after 100+ years in a barn?
KEEP IT IN THE BARN!

I would like to see the whole thing. Could be the pigeons wasted it. You can tell the age (1850, 1855, 1860) from seeing the whole thing.
