Hi; It is American. Can you post a picture of the front please. It is a 2 piece button. The 2 Piece button came into vogue about 1820. Yours is much newer. Most likely the mid 1800's ok. TREBLE GILT was just another way of saying it's been Gilted 3 times to enhance it's Color ok. Without the front picture I can't nail it down for you ok. PEACE:RONB

Hi I have added the front view. it seems blank. It looks like its made from puter and gold painted.

I assume you mean Pewter, but these are copper-alloy & gold plated.

Thanks, Do you perhaps know who would have worn it in South Africa, Wellington? I am not good with my history but they only mention the British or did the Boer's use these buttons.
I boaght this farm in Wellington and the stories of the local people mentions that the Boer's whent over this montain where i boaght.

Wellington is British & the button is American, so its any ones guess why a US guy was there in the early 1800s.
