So yesterday afternoon was by far the best day of digging ive ever had. As I was leaving another site and to get out of the rain I decided to drive some south jersey back roads. I noticed a difference in a patch of forest so I stopped and prospected. Sttaight out of gate I was in a high iron patch and dug a flat button. Then the 12 43s started. First was a 1794 liberty cap quickly followed by a 1800 draped bust one cent. I lost track of which ones came after that but a total of 8 large coppers and one 1 reale was unearthed. Also dug were 7 or 8 flat buttons, buckle, iron relic and earlier in the day an 1903 barber dime. I attached a few after electrolysis pics . Sorry some pics are sideways. The total was 4 1800 draped ,1 1797 draped, 1 1798 draped, 2 1794 liberty cap. 1 one reale, and other relics and buttons. What a day!

Wow so awsome to see my copper coin thread still alive. Not sure why so many freaked out by electrolysis. I. Would have done these beautiful coins wrong by not stabilizing them. I let one go without and it completely oxidized to an unrecognizable mess. I do it properly and they look great. Its the same old digger vs coin collector argument. Nothing was said from NGC about improper cleaning. The head of the 93 lib cap is a sheldon 19a. I will cherish these coins in my collection for the rest of my life. I am more facinated by the person that droped them in the quite woods that they were dug in.

It's the age old question; to clean or not to clean.

Personally, I wouldn't use electrolysis on those coins but I have to admit they look fantastic.

I found one Liberty Cap LC but I can only get the first three numbers on the date; 1, 7& 9. I soaked it for almost a year in olive oil and then mineral oil and still couldn't get a complete date. I finally cleaned it one last time with soap and water, gave it a distilled water rinse, let it dry and coated it in Vaseline. That's how it's gonna' stay.

Electrolysis always gets frowned upon because of so many horrible results based on being improperly done. You cannot use a stainless spoon and you cannot use an plug in adapter. You need high quality carbon such as motor brushes and use a few nine volt batteries starting with the. Deadest one. The coin should not fizz for at least on hour.has to start from the inside first. Dug coins must be cleaned. Not all coppers can be electrolysised. Try it out on an old wheat penny . No matter how you twist it a dug coin is a dug coin. And oxidation will happen unless its stabilized.

Thank you everyone for all the kind comments. Thank you wildwildbill for keeping the thread alive. I love this hobby and i continue to search for new allowed areas to dig. It can be painfull to knock on doors and make phone calls but sometimes it really pays.

Nice day. Was this public property or did you get permission?
