Hi,

Antique brass-plated cast iron architectural salvage piece, circa late 1800's to early 1900's. This piece is a little under 3.5 inches tall and 3 inches wide. It has "Part" stamped on one edge of the base, and "D638" on the other side. It weighs slightly over 1 pound.

What is it and what's it for?

Many thanks. mystery2.jpg mystery.jpg

I don't have a clue what it's original purpose is but, if I had that I'd put a roll of stamps in there.

I'm guessing there used to be a glass ball that was held in place by the rivet - or post or whatever you wanna call it.

Is anything on the bottom? Is it flat? Threaded hole? Anything?

Wow... this is a head-scratcher :)

Bottom is flat.
No holes anywhere, except for a tiny hole (probably a flaw in mfg) and doesn't go through.

If there's evidence of a screw being broken off the back, then I would say it is a door stop that screwed into the baseboard behind a door. A rubber cap or bumper snapped over the knob in the middle. View attachment 1317047

I'm gonna stick with paper weight. That sounds very likely to me, as the only air conditioning that used to be was open windows - the kind that wind liked to blow into. :laughing7:
