LC's, Cut 1748 King George, flint, flask and more...

I got out on Thurs (5/26) and yesterday (5/28) to do a little sifting. I've been in a copper slump for months now and it finally ended on Thursday with a crusty 1833 LC popping out of the side wall of the pit section. That was it for Thursday though and the rest of the pit was a bust. On Saturday I opened a different section and it was loaded! Its crazy how one small area is packed full of good non-ferrous, glass, bone and pottery and a few feet away the next section is empty!

A nice Jaw harp turned up that I tumbled and waxed, followed by a 1813 Classic Head LC that someone took a hammer to and pounded the rim until is flattened out. Was kind of bummed at this since its only my second Classic Head LC. I have lots of DB and Matron, but I just don't find many Classic Head. Another French Flintlock musket flint turns up and it looks well used. A handful of tombac buttons, shoe buckle fragments and.... Another cufflink! This one is a pewter with a drilled shank and I believe it held a paste stone at one time. The clasp is brass and has a very interesting design to it. While my 5 link streak ended many hunts ago, I have still found more cufflinks this year than I had in all the years prior.

Definitely one of my favorite finds from Saturday. I find lots of fragments like this and they are always broken cast buttons. Well I rub on this in the field and I see something on it... then I realize its a date and its a slice of a King George II Half Penny. It has "748" on the slice and the other side has the base of George's bust. I figured it was just broken because this is a very small denomination, but I believe there are chisel marks on it. You can see them on the right side of the cut on the bust side. Anyway, its a very interesting cut\broken colonial copper and something I would have never guessed. Its TINY and the Deus picked up a squeek between the nails in the clay at the bottom of the pit.

I dug the neck to this first and thought I had just found the neck to my Zachery Taylor flask that was dug a few feet away. Then the shard with the face on it surfaced and I realized I had a new flask. This is all I got from it, but I was able to get an ID on it and its pretty cool. Its a George Washington Monument Flask made between 1830-1850 commerating the George Washington Monument that was constructed in Baltimore beginning in 1813. Looking at earlier Baltimore ?Washington Monument? Historical Flasks | Peachridge Glass and here is the monument https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Monument_(Baltimore)

I only do electrolysis on iron, but when the crusty 1833 LC turned up, I decided to give it a shot.

After toothpicking:

After boiling peroxide:

After 3 min in electrolysis:

IMG_20160527_085851398.jpg

I stopped after 5 minutes. I wanted to leave some of the verdigris on it. I really like the patina on a dug copper, so I dont enjoy the clean copper look, but I do love that its a coin I can ID and enjoy now.

Thanks for looking and enjoy the holiday weekend :occasion14: Happy Hunting everyone.

I know you're not ecstatic over your recent digs Brad, but as you know, you have to keep pounding away and the quality finds will come as you've proven on many occasions. Still some cool and interesting finds, though. I've seen cut coppers before, but nothing approaching the minuscule size of yours. Like I told you yesterday, that 30 degree wedge would only represent 1/12 of a cent, and I can't imagine there was much you could buy at that price. Unique little piece to add to your collection though. Keep hitting it man .....

Thanks man. I googled and a cubic foot of dirt weighs 75-100lbs. I did the math and I moved nearly 4 tons of dirt the last few days... twice, once out and then back in. Ha. Most of the sifting the last few days didn't produce much, but I did have fun on Saturday when the jaw harp, flint and cut coin and the rest of the stuff turned up. I'm constantly amazed at what's still down there out of range. It's still producing enough to keep me sifting and after all the work, it's so satisfying when something like that complete bottle turns up.

congrats man! Hey are you 100% sure that was from a george coin and not a counterfeit real?

I'm rarely 100% sure of anything :laughing7: That would make way more sense if it was a counterfeit silver. It would have about the radius of a 2 reales, as Bill said it's a 30 degree wedge, so 1/12th of a 2 reales would be worth 2 cents or so... definitely a change worthy amount. I only thought it was a KG because of the date and the line above the date. The front definitely looks like the neck of a bust with a coin rim. The pictures have bad color so I could photograph the details, but its a nice emerald green color. Would be awesome if it was a cut counterfeit silver.

We Brad, those are some great finds. The flint is killer and your "1/12 cent" of the KG is quite a cool piece. The flask is banner material. Banner! Banner! Banner! Whoop whoop

Thanks Mike! I'm just lucky at this point. ha No signals left here except for iron, so it's luck of the draw on which pit area I open next. In the toothpick picture a chip came off her cheek and I noticed he copper appeared in good shape. At the 3 min mark I was in total disbelief... I couldn't believe how good of shape it was in. Haha If I took all the verdigris off it would have looked like it was never buried for 175 years. While I really like how it turned out because I have a displayable coin, I prefer a patina on them... so I left a little.

Congrats on some great finds

Thanks Art!

Lol. I was waiting for this :laughing7:. Seriously though... you're right, the flints are awesome... cool flaking chips on it, you can see where it would strike the frizzen. So that stuff is sweet.

Thanks Professor! If that slice didnt have a date on it, I would have just assumed it was another broken button piece. ha I really lucked out with having enough to ID it as a coin.

Wow. That coin really came out of the grave. Nice job with the electrolysis.

Thanks Johncoho! I was amazed at what was under the scale on that large cent. The only noticeable pitting on that copper is on the back at the top.

Hey Sutphin, glad to see you back and thanks a ton man! There are 5 tombac's in that mess, two coat and 3 cuff sized. There is also one brass flat button, that blue glass button and the pewter cufflink. So you might be wondering about the tombac's... they always show up looking JUST like a silver coin and just once it'd be cool if it turned out to be a silver. ha

So this is cool... I was just in the garage sorting through the lbs of iron, pottery and glass from this sifting trip and I finally took a look at a broken stirrup piece that came from deep in the packed clay on Saturday. I realized that a couple months (or so) ago I dug a similar style stirrup from about 20 yards away on one of my 'dig it all' trips. I looked for the other half then, with no luck. Well... I think I might have found the other half. I wasnt going to fill up my electrolysis tank until I built up more stuff I wanted to process, but seeing this nearly match made me mix up a batch of electrolyte and fire it up. ha So its cooking now! When its done, I'll be able to see if the breaks indeed match up, and if so, I'll probably mix up some JB Weld and put this thing back together for the display.

Another nice collection of early relics. I like the harp and your electrolysized LC turned out alright. I hope some more flask surfaces that's a great find. Sifting is a ton of work but as you have proven, pays off with persistence. Looking forward to the next round.

Looks like you had tons of fun moving tons of dirt.
You made some really cool finds.
Congrats

Thanks man! It has its highs and lows though all the heat, bugs and dirt, but I had a blast in the section that 95% of this stuff turned up.

haha Thanks Allen! I've run out of room for sure man. Don't know what to do except build an even bigger case for this site, but I'll wait until I'm done so I know just how much stuff I have.

That's a lot of great targets...and well done on the stirrup!

Thanks romeo! I'm excited to see if its a match when its done cooking... it certainly looks like it is though. I'll post an update when its out of the tank.

Thanks a ton Evan! Thanks a ton for helping me with the ID on the flask. I wasnt googling the right terms until you pointed me in the right direction. I sifted 4 pit sections in these trips and almost all of this stuff came from the one on Saturday. The Matron LC from Thurs... you know how hard the work is and you're right, persistence is the key to it all. 3 of the pit sections were loaded with mostly just nails, but the one had nails and all the goodies!
