My First Finds (Todays)

So I Got off work and gone out to eat, Got home just before Dark to test on my MD for the first time. Within 5 Minutes of going through my Yard I got this.



Had to stop though because the Mosquitoes were coming out in Swarms. Not exactly the best, But I just wanted to share my first lil Treasure with everyone :P

Congrats on your 1st digs. I recommend that you throw a few coins of different denominations on the ground and swing your coil over them so you can learn your detectors language. Also swing your coil and gradually raise it up until your detector stops speaking to you. This will give you an idea of the depth a certain target will be detected. In the future you will know how deep the target is in most cases. For instance, let's say a quarter can be detected at 7 inches. When you swing over the target and continually raise your coil while swinging, you raise it to 5 inches and it id barely beeping you now know the target is approximately 2 inches down in the soil.

Practice, practice, and practice some more! The key for you right now is to get out and dig a ton of targets. If I were you I'd start with a lot of discrimination for the first 15 or 20 hours and then I'd start using less and less as you start to learn the language of you detector. There is an old saying, "keep your coil low and slow". Learning proper detecting technique will bring you more finds.

Back in the mid 70's or early 80's I saw a magazine ad for a white's Coin Master metal detector. I bought one and quickly became frustrated because I didn't take the time to learn it. It soon disappeared into the back of my closet never to be seen again. I kick myself every time I think about it. I didn't buy another detector until 1999.

The bottom line is practice often, be patient, don't get frustrated, and just have fun.
