Found this at an old home site in the woods. It is a large heavy ball with a hook on one end and a ring on the other end. Not sure what it is but it was too heavy for me to want to carry out. I figured if it was something good I'd go back for it. Any ideas? 20160609_170649.jpg

Maybe a counter weight for a windmill or a gate. Cool find.

No, I left it in the woods because I didn't have anything to carry it in and I had my AT Pro and a decent hike back to the truck. I can go back and get it any time. Just wanted to get some ideas about what it might be.

Reminds me of a crane part. The loop would attach to the cable and the hook to the load. Nickname is Headache ball. I've stood up under one a time or two after the crane operator lowered It directly above My head.

I thought it might have been a modified cannonball (being hopeful that is). I'll get it and clean it up. It was found on family land in the Appalachian mountains in southwest Virginia.

Looks like an old Headache Ball. Many of the smaller ones are worth good money if there is a makers mark on them.

Looks like it has a ring on one end and a rod on the other. Probably some kind of counterweight. Looks like it weighs the same as a bale of hay. So my official guess is some kind of counterweight to help load something or lift something.
