I have not been out for over a week between no free time and Lyme's recovery. I went back to my old "happy place", the 1670 church/1645 meeting house.

I've been skunked here many times after many, many hunts but sometimes it keeps giving. Today it did just that...

I get a chip, not even a chirp, that registered nothing on my CTX. Knowing everything left is deep I went from Auto+3 gain to manual +30 gain. That "chip" turned into a full on slammer, but I still figured it was junk or a false iron.

I dig down and keep digging. Past 10", past 12", and finally I get it out.... ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1466633525.020537.jpg

I measure with my shovel... ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1466633568.140972.jpg

15" is a new record for a copper depth.

I knew it wasn't going to get any better at this spot, in 90-degree heat. So I sat in the shade for a few minutes with the 320 year old coin, then leave.

One side was wonderful, the other was badly crusted. I did my best cleaning and I'm happy with the results. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1466633727.254274.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1466633737.659542.jpg from the pictures I attribute it to the 1697 variety but maybe IP or Don can clear that one up for sure;)

This is the year of old coppers for me. This is my 2nd William 3rd, and I've also scored 2 KG's (the 1st), and a Woods Hibernia.

Enjoy yourselves out there and remember to check for tics.

Good digs

Steve

Awesome coin. I'm still waiting for my 1600s coin! But seriously, excellent recovery, persistence pays off

Killer coin dude! All around impressive recovery and it came out looking fantastic. I like to take my ticks out for dinner and a beer, before a night in a hotel.

Nothing wrong with that one. I've only dug a couple and just a trace of detail on each.

3rd issue: 1699-1701!

Thanks man. You'll get yours...You and Brad live in a place where 1600's is very attainable. Brad told me all about your killer weekend. I saw your post at work but I couldn't download the pics fast enough on my ship, so I had to wait until I got home. I'm going to check it out now.

I heard you take them out too. Then a little sucky-sucky at the hotel. Oops gotta go...mods are after me! Lol

Thanks IP. My other two William 3's are toast. Here's my BETTER one next to this one. I didn't realize how nice this was until I did a side by side.

Thanks for the dating. When I look closely I believe I see a 169... Can't make out the last one but I'll assume it's a 99.

Great Dig Scrappy. Someone told me once that those coins were sometimes used to place over the eyes of the deceased. Hey might be another beside that one

Thx Steve. All my others (well 2) were blasted, so this example is a rarity. Not 100' away I dug a 1734 kG2 in pristine condition almost as deep. I guess because it was a church, and not a farm, that these coppers stood a chance.

Thanks for looking DD. Yep, first hunt out was tough. Actually I lied. I did 10 minutes two days ago and had to quit from fatigue, but I don't consider that a hunt because I didn't even dig a hole;)

Today I did about a half hour before digging this, and I was feeling it already.

Cheers
