Hi all, just returned from a hunt and I might have found a nice piece of history, not sure. I dug all this stuff at a 1700s home but I did not find any buttons or coppers of the era like I was expecting.
I did get a couple silver quarters 1940 and 1956 but I was wanting something a bit older.
After a couple of so so hours of hunting
I got a good hit about 5 feet from the side of the house and about six inches deep I spied what looked like a nice old military belt plate!

If any one has information on this buckle please let me know what is. Found while on vacation at Cape Cod Mass, not in Florida.

*SOLVED * war of 1812 era buckle issued by Maine
(big thanks to niffler,PBR and texjim for the id)

U.S. Militia waist belt plate, circa 1810, brass, dimensions: about 2.70" x 2.70", 68 x 68 mm, weight about 2 oz. From page 169 of Sydney Kerksis "Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795 - 1874".
I was rechecking this thread, as i thought this might be an early militia buckle and was hoping someone would ID it..
After reading Nifflers response i decided to check my copy of Kerksis book.
Looks like a match to me. Awesome early Militia Buckle and in great shape!!. Very nice find.
P.S. You can find the book used sometimes on ebay used for around 40 bucks.
P.S.S. Rarity Value 7 out of 10.
Decided to take a couple photos and attach.
Congrats. Im jealous.. lol

Not sure about that buckle but I would guess it to be middle of the 19th C, maybe earlier. That smaller buckle dates to about 1870. Nice find

The fact that this buckle most likely saw service in the war of 1812 ...I am just blown away with it. Probably my best historical find . Thanks for the comments and the ID! I am on cloud 9.

Birdman, could you add a few nice close-up pics of that in the original post?

There's a small box in the upper right corner on the original post that says "nominate banner" (right by the #1). Click on that box and then type in why you think it should make the banner. (Rare, historically significant...etc)

This most certainly belongs on the banner. 7 out of 10 rarity puts it way up there past most CSA plates (although they have higher demand), and the plate you dug is a flawless example with no damage and intact with attachments!

Stunning.
