Before lunch we completed our grid pattern across the entire middle section of the field. My first 2 recordable finds were the fourrée denarius & a hammered, but the Roman Bronzes had trickled out.
So after lunch we both agreed to grid for 2 hours below the main spread of the Roman coins, just to check they had run out in that direction (like we thought). There were no further Roman Coins but Cru'dad gave one of those funny Gold Coin noises, which confused me for a second, as I thought, 'it can't be Celtic Gold so must be a Nice Roman Silver'! Nope....:headbang:

(5 Hours)

Steam Engine Cog? (anyone know?)
Livery Button
Crotal Bell
Roman Steelyard Weight
Late Medieval Buckles
Jetton
3 Scrappies
Silver Plated Roman Coin
James I Halfgroat (Hammered)
1881 Sydney Australia Sovereign (22 Ct Gold mined in Australia)

It's been some years since we last had a modern Gold Coin, & it took 20 acres of systematic searching to pluck this random out of the field. Nearest house is 1 mile & we were not getting any other period finds...:laughing7:

I forgot to mention those buckles are amazing. The spectacle buckle is something I'm after....although those look earlier than we see over here. Is that correct?

The spectacle design was used for many hundreds of years - 1350-1720.

The most common (medium) type came from boot buckles, the more buckles you had up the side of the boot, the more money you had. (often upto 5 or more) That's why we find so many, lost in mud off the boot.

Although most stopped in the early 18th C, I've had a large one from the late 18th C, & the design was still being copied in the 20th C, but in different metal types etc...

Fantabulous Finds,,,
Not all that familiar with Australian Coins, but is that an "s" mint mark on the Gold Coin below the Queen Victoria bust?
Congrats to both of you.

Congrats to both of you.

Yes, the Sydney mintmark. My title was deliberately mis-leading, the Gold is Australian mined, but the coin is British.

Although 'modern' by our standards, the last half Sov was 3 years ago & then we need to go back nearly 10 years for the next one. So, a rare find for us & very welcome addition to the collection.
