Couldn't believe it! Was getting ready for work this morning and noticed this in the junk pile. Almost had a heart attack! It's a hammer from a musket. Not sure where it was found because it's been here a while. Just goes to show. uploadfromtaptalk1468234045415.jpg uploadfromtaptalk1468234051620.jpg uploadfromtaptalk1468234058511.jpg

Good save. Check it and recheck it before you throw it away.

Good job on re-finding a lost relic! :icon_thumleft:

I have in the past recovered "lost" coins in my junk pile...you never know!

Here are two things I almost threw in the trash while I was hunting but thank goodness I decided to save them instead.
One was a big iron ball that I had no clue about at the time.
Couldn't figure out why someone would make something like this and it wasn't until a couple weeks later when I threw a picture of this thing up on a forum asking for opinions did I realize what I had.
Several more knowledgeable members immediately came back and informed me I now owned a very nice specimen of canister shot...and I was floored!

Another time I found a huge crusty disc I couldn't clean off in the field at all but I was sure it was just an old knock out plug.
Still, I threw it in my tumbler when I got home and eventually saw a bit of writing on the thing and over time cleaned it off even more.
Turns out this was a half dollar size merchant's token with a date and a pretty rare one at that.

After these experiences I no longer take anything I find for granted and always double and triple check before I throw anything away.

Its a circa 1850s percussion cap hammer from a pistol. I'm rubbish with guns but I do have a complete one of those.

SWEET find! I want a lock and hammer so bad. I keep a bunch of 5 gallon buckets of iron just for this purpose. Many times I have looked back through junk iron and picked out some keepers that I missed the first time.

Just last week I put a hand full of nails in my tumbler and after a day I noticed that one of the nails turned out to be a dog statue of some sort. Once I noticed it, I took him out of the tumbler and put it into electrolysis. It was pretty far gone, but still turned out okay. Trying to get a post together this evening of my last sifting trips and this dog will be in it.

Finding is sometimes half the battle.

Nice save. I'd have tossed it without being the wiser. Good eye you have.

I gotta agree with Deft Tones though.... That would be in my permissions' trash can, never mind my own...

Not knocking it....just would have no clue.

Thanks Mr. T. I had a minute to sit down and research. It has a band of metal down the center that looked like a pocket knife. I think I found it. It's pretty toasted, but still a cool find in the junk pile.
