I'd say I dug this tonight, but as it was only about 2" deep there wasn't much digging involved. I'm a coin guy, so I had to get Keith @ Fort Bedford to positively ID this for me. Not being a relic guy though, I'm still stoked! I'm really impressed at how good of shape it's in for being perched basically on the surface of a rocky outcrop for 150 years.

One question I do still have - when I look these up online I see a similar but different pattern that keeps popping up everywhere (less empty space in the lower corners). Can anybody tell me anything else about this?

Edit: Added "after" photo after all the crud dried and fell off. No cleaning other than with a dry toothbrush

Beautiful Buckle! I believe they had a wreath on the underside that's missing sometimes. Is that what you were talking about? Paul:coffee2:

Yeah that's what I meant. There is a little raised area to the left of the eagle that a relic guy on FB said would have been from when the wreaths were attached. It makes sense because my first thought when I saw that area was that it looked like a bad solder job or something. Apparently there should be a numbered stamp on the back. Haven't located it though.

Beautiful piece and yeah the silver wreaths hardly ever hold up. That's a find anyone who collects relics would love to have.

I dug the same plate at a farm in Kingston, NY this spring. the stamp is at the top left of your photo of the back of plate. the plate has several varieties and the # was for matching to the correct belt. it is the 1851 Federal issue

Over the course of looking for the number, all the dark material fell off the back so it's totally clean and smooth now, although not by choice. Definitely no number on it. I've been talking to some people in a relic group on Facebook and they're telling me that about half of the ones they've collectively found were not numbered. Does that mean anything?

Updated: After it dried out after being dug most of the dark material fell off more or less on its own including everything on the reverse. No numbers for sure.

Awesome condition! Laying on top relatively dry between the rocks helped for sure. :icon_thumleft:

WTG on the Eagle Buckle. My guess it's CW period and was non-regulation otherwise it would have numbers stamped in it.

Very nice find.
Other than the One's with German Silver Wings (that usually fall off) I don't know much about the different styles.

Only cause I have never Found one.

Would love to dig one "Numbers or not'.
