Got out this morning before the sun came up. Went to a small woods lot where I've found a few coins in the past. Got an iffy signal at 5 inches and pulled this 5 dollar gold piece out. Searched for 2 more hours and no more coins. It was getting hot by then so headed home a very happy man.

Looking at this thread, from the OP, I think this needs review. I see many posters commenting some sort of fire effect, other than continuing to repeating this claim, I would like to see some sort of evidence that fire has this effect on gold.

While the original images may be off in color, the raises and bumps on the coin in post #14 (front and back) are not indicative of a gold coin, no matter what has happened. Gold is very dense, and there are no air bubbles in gold coins that expand and cause this type of raising when heated.

I have never seen any gold artifact incur any additions, I mean really, a gold lump on a gold coin? Gold has endured the millennium for a reason, it is very stable.

Any local coin dealer would be able to sort this out. Would like to hear about the results.

I'm sorry to see that my post has caused some trouble here. I only want to share what I find. I'm fortunate to have access to some great sites. I would never try to mislead anyone or take credit for something that wasn't deserved. I just want to share my finds and enjoy everyone else's experiences. This is a great forum and we need to respect everyones opinions. Good luck to all. Art

seekgh... That is why I suspected the coin in my first post to this Thread. However, in defense of trapperart's coin, I believe that it is possible that the coin is genuine and that it may have been a victim of heat from a fire. It is likely that it was not directly in a fire but close enough to heat the Copper, any possible contaminants inside as well and yes, even bring air bubbles to the surface. Gold can get air bubbles inside if not properly heated and mixed and it is much more likely when Copper is added for strength and then there is the likelihood of possible contaminants that made it into the molten metal. The metal of a coin does not have to become totally liquid for metals such as Copper as well as air bubbles to migrate their way to the surface of a coin. We have seen it many times here on Treasure Net with Silver and other coins that have been in fires or have been subjected to very intense heat without them actually melting.

Art... I am sorry that your Thread about your' find has gotten totally off planet! How that attacks on me all because I defended another member and his' find in another Thread made it into your Thread, is beyond me. I am sorry that my posts defending myself only added to getting your Thread off track! This will be my last post to this Thread and again I am sorry!

Just got back from Northeast Gold And Coin a licensed coin dealer in the area. He measured weighed and checked with the laser thingy and assured me it was the real thing. He said he had seen gold like that before and all he would commit to was environmental damage. Wouldn't or couldn't say what caused it, but offered me 290.00 melt price. I told him it was priceless to me. Just thought you would want to know. Thanks again for all the interest. Art
