🥇 BANNER Found my first gold coin

Got out this morning before the sun came up. Went to a small woods lot where I've found a few coins in the past. Got an iffy signal at 5 inches and pulled this 5 dollar gold piece out. Searched for 2 more hours and no more coins. It was getting hot by then so headed home a very happy man.

It is a nice find. Worth far more to you than spot.

Not sure why these posts were considered 'attacks', just looking at the different options and opinions. For fire, copper has a higher melting point that gold, so it is unlikely that the coin was hot enough to melt the copper (which is usually mixed pretty well throughout) and not have a drastic effect on the coin itself.

Perhaps the odd color has to do with the cleaning of the coin, not sure it was detailed how that was done.

Only washed with plain water came out of the ground weird. I was searching the net on environmental damage, someplace it said rotting wood could cause it. I just don't know. I am convinced now that it is real and I'm real happy.

Congrats on finding out that the coin is genuine! I am so very glad that my initial assessment was all wrong! A light douse of Rubbing Alcohol, rubbing with a soft finger tip, rinse in water, then patted dry between the folds of a soft towel might help the appearance for display. It is hard to say what caused the environmental damage but I lean heavily on heat from a fire. There is not much that can adversely effect Gold but I am not sure what chemical reaction and by-product is given off when wood rots.

Now that we know it is genuine, I am placing my Banner vote for the find and I hope that anyone else that was waiting for the verdict will do as well since the verdict is now in!

Nice find if it is in fact genuine! I hope I am wrong but I have never seen a Gold coin come out of the ground or out of fresh water or Salt water looking like that! It appears that it was made poorly in a mold thus the porous and bubbly look to it.

if you get a chance, drop by a jewelry store that has an untrasonic cleaner. These work really well, and would get everything out of the lines without damaging the coin.

If it's not a counterfeit, I'd bet it went through a low-temp fire. The surface has raised bumps which would be impossible on a mint struck coin.

I have no idea why people have such a hard time believing this is fire damaged. We have seen hundreds of silver coins with the same damage, why is the odd gold so hard to believe. Nearly ALL of my modern (Victorian) Gold coins were dumped with other waste on the fields & not lost. Dumping coins/other objects in fire ash is common. Its still happening today with the 'Green Waste'.

I personally think the damage to the coin makes it more unique. It's not like I'm searching for pristine coins to sell. It's a hobby looking for old and unique things. I'd say the coin fits the bill. I'm happy with it.
