Found a "U.S" Embossed Pocket Knife Today. Military Issue? WWII? WWI? Any Ideas?

Found a crusty pocket knife in the woods today. It's 3" long and only 1/4" thick. Looked like the outer wooden handles were rotted off, so I just stuffed it my pocket and didn't really check it out. But when I got home and cleaned it up, I realized it was a very thin knife with "U.S." embossed on the sides. It also has stars going around the outer edges of the sides. Is this some sort of military issue knife? Could be a cool find or maybe it's just junk. Any input would be appreciated.

I find it very hard to believe that this knife is from the 80's...

In fact I find it very hard to believe that this knife is from THIS century...
Let alone the last 50 years.

Very hard... sorry. heh

No mate I did not say this one was from the 80's I said I was issued my first one back then. Like many things from the US Army most of the good stuff is just old stock.

Feel free to google the knife or better yet contact a Quarter Master your self.

The simple stuff does not change very much.

But do not get me wrong, I am not trying to take anything from this find. It sure is cool as heck, they are even nicer when they are clean.

I think Worm-Slicer found it! That sure looks like my knife! Way to go! I had just about given up trying to find one on Google. Definitely one of my better finds in the woods!

I was going to say that I have seen CW era pocket knives with that font and a star between the letters. Thanks for posting the photo Worm-Slicer. What book is that?

Like I said in the first post... BANNER !

They'll be a TNet uprising if a crusty pocket knife makes banner! LOL!

It is pretty rare to find any Civil War stuff around here. Thought I'd find a Rev War button or a cannonball before I ever found anything from the Civil War here in RI.

I voted banner on this one, cause of all the years I've relic hunted I've never dug one or never seen one dug by the many other relic hunters I've come into contact with and I've dug quite a bit of plain pocket knives dropped by soldiers on both sides. I've always wanted to dig one of these patriotic knives but I know I'll be super lucky if I ever do.

I am gonna just stick my neck out...
And at the risk of my "opinion" on things posted being tarnished... or more tarnished than it already may be :P

I think this is EARLY American military... no later than civil war.
Just a mere guess by the look and of course,,, that friggin simple star... that is what tosses it into the coolness tank... that single star with that FONT.

Looks like there's a lot of stars on it

Here is a more modern version.

On another computer today where I can open pictures up, this is exactly what I thought I was looking at yesterday, just a more rusty version.

Anyway, the finders pic looks so much better when you can opening things up. LOL

I also voted banner. I looked also and couldn't find an example anywhere. Who cares if it is a rusty unusable knife. It had a place in the darkest days of the USA.
