I have detected on and off since the 1980's and before that I went out with my mom with he local archaeological society on various digs. Metal detectors were rarely used at that time. I found a few arrowheads and a few pieces of colonial pottery, but not much and never a coin. Anyway, I found my first gold coin, which I had previously posted here, in January of I think 2013 gold coin.jpg IMG_0002.JPG on the Delaware Beach at the site of the wreck of the Faithful Steward and the Three Brothers. The Faithful Steward went down in 1785 and the three Brothers in 1774. It's an English Guinea dated 1774.

So....I first didn't really believe this NEW coin when I found it quite recently, but have determined it's genuine. I have found several new fake copy coins on the beaches and I am just plain skeptical anymore. I found a pewter Netherlands Daadler, maybe I spelled that right. It looked odd, and sure enough was a reproduction. These were given away as gas store coin sets as the story goes in the 1960's or 1970's as type sets of early coins used in the American Colonies. Now this coin is a 1945 Mexican 2 1/2 peso gold coin. It still has some something discoloring it a little, but I haven't cleaned it much yet. I kind of think it's a recent drop, somebody's lucky charm maybe. This one was also found on a beach.

Who would have thought? Maybe one day I'll find an American gold coin.

My daughter found what apparently was a lost coin purse??? a couple years ago or whenever it was after some sand replenishment on a beach and found a small 1/2 escudo. Now if I can only get the other daughter interested.....

I did find a third one but it was a reproduction! Heart breaker, too.
