Two more hammered silver coins came up yesterday. Both cut half pennies, still cut coins are great to find. The smaller one looks to be one of the infamous king John, a short cross 1199-1266. The slightly bigger one is of Henry III, voided long cross 1447-72. These small cut coins, must have been very easy to lose, especially after a few tankards of mead. Robert.

Hello villagenut, they were cut in half to use as small change. Some were cut at the mint, and some were cut after leaving the mint. Wonder what a cut half would have bought.

Congratulations. Beautiful finds. Especially like the King John. He really was a bad boy.

At the time those treasure were made, New Zealand was probably uninhabited by Humans. Hence my envy of your History.
