Hi all took a long walk to a site I've been wanting to get to. Research showed it to date from early 19th century to early 20th century....not as old as I'd wished but it was remote and in an area where ATV's are off limits. So I had hopes only hard core detectorists would make the hike. I drove as far as I could on the dead end road and parked and hiked what would be a mile to the site. It was a very neat site with a large house hole , a large barn and a smaller barn and what looked like the foundation of a root cellar ; all layed out on a plateau about an acre on the mountain top. MY finds were many and required a lot of work to pick out in the iron . I spent about 6 hours and pulled 4 Indian's ; including a fatty 1865 and a 1909 that validated the latter time it was lived in. I also pulled 2 large cents one 1818 ( I think) and a clipped 1812. A few buttons and a door bell cover that is solid brass; and is a very cool relic. Why this family needed a door bell is beyond me because then like now the nearest house was 3 miles away! The best find was the 1865 2 cent piece in great condition. All in all a great day with my digging partner and best pal Max.( PS sorry no cleaned up pics as I'am posting this on my first day of vacation and didn't clean them up before I left.)

Thanks all. Yes it is a large area and I'am sure there was a lot of time spent working in it . I plan on returning and doing the outskirts.

I'm no expert on cellar holes but if that's later than 1820 I'd be surprised. That is one heck of a pretty spot - and to spend it with your buddy, that's just priceless.

Nice finds Gaspipe! I am not sure where your located in New England, but when you mentioned no ATVs allowed, all I thought about is state forest property. Be careful, I know here in Mass, it is
loaded with state forest which is off limits to detecting, big fines or worse, just saying. I get very frustrated with how much land in Mass is not detectable due to state forest land. I believe at
least 60% of land that is woods here is state forest property, it really frustrates me.
