Got these today. Went detecting, then stopped a few places on the way home, and picked these two up.

The Merc is a great example of a clashed die. Look at the extra stuff at Liberty's forehead, in front of her face and under her neck. On the reverse you can see her profile sticking out on the right. NICE find IMHO.

Now the Indian Cent is ODD. The coin itself shows a good deal of wear, but look at the double strike?? on the obverse. What do you think? I have a similar 1990 Lincoln out for slabbing right now. The lettering on the reverse is somewhat flattened. merc.jpg merc1.jpg badindian.jpg badindian2.jpg

The 1864 wanted it's picture taken too!

I'm going to have it slabbed. If it was post mint, it was done a very, very long time ago due to the original patina on the coin. But it's cool nevertheless.

Yeah, the double impression on the Indian looks recessed and reversed, which would imply post mint tampering. Pretty sure BigWaveDave nailed that one.

I wonder what would happen if I smacked two Indians together with a pair of 4 pound hand sledge hammers? May find out in the am.

The Indian definitely had another coin pressed into it, also why the reverse is flattened. If it was double struck in any way the lettering would not be reversed. Nice Mercury though.

I'm with you guys on the pressed coins, it's still kind of neat though. It and the Merc were sent to get graded yesterday.

presently garrett gta 1000 , fisher cz5 and now a fisher cz21 10.5" coil and vibra=quatic 2 pinpointer add another cz21
there is the possibility that an already struck penny stuck in the die and new planchant was fed in and struck cause what you see i would let a grading service determine what happened

That's the precise reason I sent it for grading....Will take 3-4 weeks and I'll know for sure. The Merc may come in as au.

Well, my test worked....sort of. I took two common Indian cents, put them head to tails on a flat surface and whacked them hard with a 4 pound hand sledge. It left no impression, 1 just slightly bent, so I'm thinking this was done with EXTREME force, like that used to mint a coin in the first place. I'll find out in about 3 weeks when it comes back from the grading service.

Pretty easy to do it with a vice, a hammer bounces too much. I used to do it quite a bit in my destructive childhood! Most likely that is why the reverse is flattened.
