NEW PARK,, LOTS OF COINS & A LITTLE "LOVE"

I took a ride up north to an 8 acre park that another Tnet member has mentioned to me in the past. Prior to going, I pulled up the site on the internet. It has quite a sledding hill, and a very interesting history. I keep telling people, who might say that they are hunting a park that only opened in the 70's. All parks had to be something else before they became parks. This parkland that was donated to the city, was an estate, going back to the 1860's. The park is almost 8 acres and there is no way you can hit it all in one day. I gave it a 7 hour hunt, starting with the sledding hill. I was quite impressed with the amount of clad although I did hit a few deep wheat pennies. The oldest being 1917.

The Parks Enforcement Police visited about 3 hours into the hunt. Of course it was during me searching a plug. Right away after I greeted them in my usual friendly manner, I was told by one officer, "I don't think you can do that here.' Two of the 3 officers were amazed when I showed them my NYC Parks Permit. I knew right away that they were rookies. The 3rd officer thanked me for being so cooperative and asked me to make sure that I back fill any holes that I dig. I think this is the 4th time this year that I have been visited by PEP.

I didn't locate any silver on this trip but a return trip will be on my schedule in the near future. Besides the Wheat Pennies, I located a toasted Buffalo Nickel, and a 1959 Canadian Penny. The surprise find of the hunt was a 10kt Gold Filled "LOVE" plate that I think was part of an ankle bracelet or necklace. One reason I recovered this plate is because it seems that whoever is hitting this park, doesn't dig too many nickels. I dug 23 Nickels on this visit. I also recovered a brass ring.
My total coin recoveries came to 114 coins. I know there is silver at this site, and like Arnold says, "I'll be back!

Pulling a buffalo is a great sign for more oldies to be hiding there kevin. I'm certain that wasn't dropped in the 70's. Looking forward to your next trips finds. Did you check historic aerials for old pics of the site? It may point you in the good spots to swing the coil. I agree 8 acre's is not gonna be hunted in a day by one hunter.

The AT PRO really works well in fresh water. I have recovered gold rings in lakes with it.
Now Salt Water is a different creature altogether. Salt Water is a conductor. No matter how you adjust the PRO, you're going to get a lot of ghost signals and falsing. You can watch all the videos you want or listen to people who tell you to turn down your sensitivity, it just doesn't work.
I took the advice of an accomplished water hunter who does this for a living, and purchased an Excalibur. That machine is at home in salt water and is submersible to 200 feet. The initial costs may seem a little pricey but my first Excalibur paid for itself within 2 seasons. JMHO

ATW, just spent an eternity looking at the NYS rules & regs. on metal detectors in state parks, camps & forests______can't dig here, or there, or yonder, or over by that, or next to this, or under this rock, and on and on and on. keep a log & turn over "significant this and that", they act like THE STATE ( that's you & me) owns everything!!. a 363 page PDF BOOK that pretty strangles us, not sure if breathing and breaking wind are legal. glad you got some shovel time_____just don't call me for bail money :---)

I am no ninja expert, but I think the "ninja way" would be to become completely still and use the power of the mind to make the police disappear into another dimension, or perhaps an alternate reality.

Those cops are probably guarding something. Something like a park jam packed with golden rings!

Glad to hear that the encounter with the Park Police was a cordial one. I buy a $10 detecting permit for my local county parks every year, and nobody has ever asked me to produce it (of course, with my luck the first year I skipped the permit would be the year I'd get called on it).

Thanks for the info, ATW. I tried it when I was down in Virginia last week and it was O.K. in dry sand but crappy in wet sand and salt water no matter what I tried with the settings.

I have volumes of research on permissions.
I have looked into all 62 Counties. When a County said that county parks were off limits, I requested permissions from the munipalities. (Cities, towns, & villages) They have authority over their own parks. I have emailed numerous municipalities and have been given permission to use a recreational metal detector on thousands of acres of parkland. Send me a PM with the county that you want to hunt and include your email address.
