Possibly my best U.S. Button?

I hit a BRUTAL farmyard after work today. Wow it was bleak! I nabbed a few modern pennies and the tag with a 6 on it.

I had enough of that and headed home. I stopped at an old faithful spot and dug this really nice old button. I've been trying to determine exactly what it is. It does not have a shank, would have been attached with thread through the two small holes on the back. It's a two piece button, and there are no back marks.

I've found several exactly the same online listed as Indian Wars era, and then I've also seen the possibility of being later repros made for veterans who were missing buttons. Also heard the possibility of military style fashion button.

As much as I'd like to think this is my first U.S. Indian Wars button, I really would like to be sure. Any button heads out there have an idea?

Thanks Tex! It certainly resembles the 28 C, however mine has no back marks. This is making me curious.

I'm not an expert, but I'd be shocked if that button wasn't from the 1800's. Most two piece buttons I find from the 1900's have a lot of guilt on them and the patina looks different compared to the pre-1900 buttons. Just my opinion...

I'm with you the back worries me. No books on these, just a bad gut feeling its just post 1900. Hope I'm wrong, would love to hear from those that know.

Beauty of a button but it looks like a more modern self shank which may indicate post 1900.
