Maybe depicting cupid and psyche the items on the ground are a bow and a torch and the statue up behind the woman Is a soldier with a spear maybe.Strange picture a lot of symbolism just need to put all together to figure out the meaning I thought the woman was a gypsy but the torch could be something she held, but definitely not lady liberty.very cool.

she is not wearing a juggy containment garment. cupid is either being held in or about to be let out_______________in/out, in/out, in/out-------I'm sad or happy-------love is the ultimate comedy, or is it tragedy----so confused :laughing7::BangHead::laughing7::BangHead:

I appears Roman or Greecian. There is a child on the other side of that door. I look at the statue in the shadows on the upper right and that looks roman. I think sandals are also Roman

It's not a photograph, its an illustration or perhaps a painting. The item with the bow is cupid's quiver. According to the link below, the image was used on a tobacco crate label around 1860.

My interpretation of the image is that of a woman taking control of her own heart or desires.

edit - sorry couldn't get the link to work....

saw it on GettyImages "captive cupid"

Nice Id. But it sure looks like the grim reaper to the right and above the woman. Not seen in the link you posted very well. Thanks for the ID!!

I got the link to work before you changed it!!
