Finally, after a rainy week today was sunny.

I've been planing to search this new site weeks ago.
My first coin was this Big follis of Justinian I 525-567.

Other byzantine coins came out but after I had lunch I was searching near a clif. It was a high tone and I prepared the pinpointer but didn't use it. I could see it.

And than, leaving, I found another silver.

I am tired and I'm not writing any more. Just wanted to share it with you.

Now you're getting the hang of this.

Due to our history its very unlikely we will find a Byzantine period coin, but you never know....

WTG Vince, absolutely mind blowing...I find a coin from the 1800's and I do a dance...im not sure what I would do with a 1500 year old one! I would be in coin overload...very nice..ddf

Vince, is the cleaned coin in post #4 the reverse of the "M" (follis) coin shown in your post #1?
If so, have you also cleaned and can you show the 'M' side again after cleaning?
Thanks,
Don.

Hi Don.
No, it is not. That is the reverse for the half follis. Here it is. When I first saw the coin the M side looked better but when I cleaned it the other side has more details. The large M was 40 nummis.

Dude you rocked it today. :headbang: I doubt if I could sleep. Everyone of the finds would have acted as amphetamine to me. I am envious of your local, but can live it vicariously through your posts.

Keep posting your great finds my friend.

If the Roman number to the right of the 'M' is "II", that would indicate the 'indiction' date for this ruler. If I use Sears' "Byzantine Coins and their values" as a guide, Indiction year II equates to the regnal year 12; or 538/539. On the other hand, if I use another source (https://books.google.com/books?id=_...=onepage&q=COIN INDICTION JUSTINIAN I&f=false) it shows Indiction year 2 is the same as 'our' years 552/553.
If you want the "head's side" inscription and it's meaning, just let me know.

Thanks Don.
It is a three so more probably is the first version as Iustinianus reigned from 526 to 565 AD.It is just an opinion. You know more than me.
On the other side it looks like I can read iustini-anus but I'm not sure. It would be great if you can figure out the meaning.

Thanks mate.
Going up and down the hill made me fitter.
Finding the first coin makes a great effect but than I have to hurry to cover as much of the area as possible. It is not the same as searching in a park. It is a difficult terrain and it looks like nothing is down there.
I hope I can get one more time there before turning back to Italy.
