So I went out for a few minutes before dark to see if I could pop anything cool out of the ground in my yard. I decided to go to a hill where I have found a wide range of different relics and coins dating from the 1700s-1940s. Not expecting to find much because of how much I had already pulled out, I get a low tone on my machine. (brass or nickel signal) Once I pull the plug back I check it to see where the target is. I get a beautiful high-tone in the plug. I pull out my Propointer, and once I locate the target I start to lightly brush the dirt away with my finger. Then I see the rim of a coin. Thinking its just another wheat cent I pluck it out. Then I lightly brush the loose surface dirt off with my finger. Turns out it's a 1901 Indian Head Cent, making it my first Indian cent ever.

Here is the front, which is in OK shape

Here is the back, which is pretty toasted

The funny thing is that I had walked over with my detector where I found this coin so many times and I missed it. It just goes to show you how easy it is to miss a target!

your first? You must have jumped right over the 1800's to become a ColonialDigger :tongue3: Just kidding, congrats on your first. As far as being a colonial digger, I get it. I can't remember the last time I dug a Barber coin because I just don't put myself on those sites.

joeyfresh you are exactly right about "jumping right over the 1800s." I have found 4 coins from the 1700s and relics from then too. I have found 1800s relics as well, but I am still looking for my first 1800s coin! There just seems to be a void in coins dating from the 1800s in a lot of the places I hunt.
