Button Update;
(so far stumped the expert);
''Yes Donegal Militia, one of the Irish ones. It isn't one I have seen before so will see if anyone else who knows more about Irish stuff than me has come across it before.'
Further Update;
''My main Irish collector does indeed have one in his collection and points out the double N in Donnegal is very unusual and is what makes this particular style a bit of a curiosity!''

This small field is normally way too high with weeds to bother with. In fact we only tried it once in some died back areas with pretty poor results other than 1 scrappy. However, it was once ploughed years ago & this is the first time we have seen most of it cut flat. It has no Intel, so it was a blind hunt/gridding session.
Some signs were showing including the lead, so at half time I thought we had a chance at silver.:thumbsup:
I did just over 5 Hours & Cru'Dad did 2.5 Hours;

2 Tudor Buttons
Donegal (Irish) Militia Button, Circa 1815 ish, I think its rare because its spells it DONNEGAL & I can't find another online!
2 Lead Tokens
Leather Mount
Watch Winder
Counterstamped Geo II Halfpenny - 'T TAYLOR' (Not in my book, only I or J Taylor)
Roman Nail Cleaner (Random!)
18th C Coin Weight
Medieval Lead Container thought to be either for Holy Water or Bird Seeds!
Very Rare Find - Charles II Shilling circa 1663-84 - Never found one, they start in the low hundreds & go up to £10,000 in EF condition! (Shame its so worn, the reverse is near blank)

Checked genealogy of old irish family names as we discussed earlier. The button marked Donnegal. Could find nothing relating so far.:dontknow:

A lot of nice stuff keeping in mind it's December. I always like to see these tiny Tudor Buttons, coin weight, that Donnegal button is interesting and the Shilling is very cool to have in the collection. Worn, but still a rare coin. A little bit of everything makes it a good hunt in my opinion. :icon_thumleft:

Wow, that Charles shilling is a really amazing find. 17th century British silver is on my list.

Great buttons and asymmetrical buckle too, Cru. Rock on!

You may get the odd Will III, but Charles II is super rare. I've only had the odd Maundy Money of him, I'm more likely to find a Celtic Gold coin than this! It seems that most of his coins were taken back by the Mint & re-coined.

Heres, hoping my contact has something on that button, I would love to know myself. The spelling is more like the Surname of someone rather than the place, very odd.

Another awesome hunt Cru! Not bad at all for 5 hours of blind hunting with no Intel on some scrub land. That Charles II Shilling is sweet too. :occasion14:

I'd say that's a successful hunt considering it was a blind hunt! If you tried that here, even in New England you'd generally get squat! Congrats.

I will update if we get any further info, but this maybe another one to add to my collection of unknown patterns?? Fingers Crossed.

Further Update on Button;
''My main Irish collector does indeed have one in his collection and points out the double N in Donnegal is very unusual and is what makes this particular style a bit of a curiosity!''

Clearly this has the top collectors & experts stumped, but at least we now know of 1 other!
