Back to the hunted out colonial field. Had a really good day today. Decided to head to the back of the field and found an iron patch. Made some adjustments on the CTX and listened. Started finding buttons, an Eagle I button, a 1/2 Reale, a large cent, 2 cent, IH, a Rosie lol, some horse tack, an unidentified chunk of ornate silver, and other typical finds for an area like this.
I called my buddy on the cell phone, he was on the other side of the field. Told him to come over as I was finding some good stuff. When he gets there I show him my finds including the big dandy button. Tell him how nice it is, even has a floral pattern on the edge. He turns to me and says buddy, that's not a floral pattern, that's writing. Wait, what?
Take a look, it says INDEPENDENCE, UNITY & PROSPERITY, with 13 stars. No idea what I have here, but I hope it's a good button. Going to do some research now. Thanks for looking, Mike
(Edit) I BELIEVE THIS IS MY FIRST GEORGE WASHINGTON INAUGURAL BUTTON!

As this button is collecting dust in my drawer, I have decided I will donate it, along with other various period relics to a museum. Have not decided on which one as yet. Might take a ride to Manhattan and visit NY museum of history. Hopefully they appreciate the piece and will display it for others to see. If not there are several small museums in my area that i"m sure would love this button. I just can't see it being "wasted" in my collection next to some crotal bells and buckles.

They do both look awesome side by side don't they. Two amazing buttons, a lot of work put in.

That's great man. I have a good amount of items donated to museums. It feels much better to have so many people see your finds.

Congrats on making banner! I see I voted for ya!

Killer find! I am guessing the adjustments you made were using the "Ferrous coin" target separation to pick out the goodies from under the iron? Well deserved banner for those honeypot finds :-)

This is only making the banner now? This button is one that should have been up there in the first 5 minutes... the type of find you shouldn't have to wait for votes as it's that obvious. Better late than never!

Wasted is what happens to most donations so you'd be much smarter to do a long term loan. That way you're guaranteed it's displayed and if you ever change your mind you can get it back. I personally think the proper place for it is in your collection and it doesn't have to be displayed beside anything else... and shouldn't because it's good enough to be in a display of its own.

I hear ya IP. I still have it. Putting together a nice display of everything I found at this site. Now to convince the wife to let me put it in the den.

It was a simple oversight which has been rectified by an honest and trustworthy moderator. All is well, thanks.

I totally believe that, because many of the more 'common' dug GWs make it.... so this one wouldn't take a whole lot of thought.
