COMBINATION POST: scroll down...

Brad and I got out for a hunt. The temp was about 15-20 degrees the entire day, however we were outside of the snowstorm line, so that worked out. The ground was still soft, but that's not going to last long. The entire day we had dirt freezing to everything. Our shovels were iced over, and our pinpointers were even getting frozen to our pouches.

We tried to find a concentrated pit but couldn't find enough concentration. So we did some brush removal and iron clearing instead with some good success. I'm very pleased with the buttons I dug, and a few were early. Among them was my best example of this type of pewter. I thought it could have been a USA button when first dug.

Other notables was a two-piece 18th C button (a first), fur trade era blowhole button, a drawer pull plate (or another theory is a fork furrule), and a 1770's counter King George half penny.

Great company and great fun. It's always a blast hunting with Brad. He brings a lot to this hobby and is very knowledgeable.

Stay warm and good digs!

Steve

It worked. Good finds![emoji106]
I got nailed with 40cm of snow and cold temps. It's going to get warm again later in the week and hope long enough for the snow to melt. Ground still soft under it for sure! [emoji2]

Good this time. Great hunt indeed! I have the exact thing in the last picture. I also assume it's part of a drawer pull. Nice finds like that make the cold a little more bearable.

Yep, drawer pull plate. The patina on it amazes me.

It's torture wanting for the snow to melt, but they're calling for almost 60 degree weather in the area so fingers crossed.

Awesome time Steve. :occasion14: That drawer pull eschechelon plate is really nice man. That green color and border design on it are sweet. Congrats on that nice copper and those super early buttons too. That soldered early 2 piece is really interesting. Also... Killer condition on the pewter button.

We are insane spending 9 hours outside in low 20 degree temperatures. My pinpointer was constantly frozen solid in the holster, you could even see the ice crystals on it. I had to melt off the mud lollipop from the tip a couple times, by holding it until it melted.... I even tried chipping it off with my digger, but it was like concrete. Our shovels were a whole other show.... I carried back about 2 lbs of mud that's still frozen on the shovel in my garage now. That said... It was totally worth it man.

I'll just group my stuff into your post. I really like the etched tombac and American Knife parts. The thimble says "Forget Me Not" around the base. The brass spoon has some cool makers marks on it too. A backpack of iron was all it took to nab a few keepers!

I had an awesome time hanging out man. I'll be processing your iron in the next few weeks and can't wait to see those bells once they're preserved. I'll keep you posted on the progress.

Ouch. I heard from a friend on the South Coast of Mass that you're buried. Good thing it never lasts too long on the Cape.

Great shots you added. I was having trouble getting the low tones between all that iron with the CTX. I should have brought my Deus like you did. And great finds. Those machine turned tombacs are unbelievable. That broken one would have been the "belle of the ball" if t we're whole.

I'm all, yep we're insane. As you know my wife lets me know, but this time of year you have to go for it. The door up here is basically now shut. Maybe this winter I'll go down and bother you and Joey;)

Steve and Brad, you guys really are hard core! To find anything in those conditions is commendable and both of you came back with a variety of good finds. Well done!
Steve I think it was so cold that even your pictures froze :-\

Thanks Pepp. Even though they're talking about a thaw, I think this may be it for the NorthEast.
