I went into an area today to try to do a combination metal detect and shed hunt. This area has a lot of old cellar holes that I have yet to hit. But there was too much snow to detect but took mental notes of cellar holes found for spring. But I did manage to find a big set of moose antlers. I then hit another cellar hole lower in elevation, my goal was to find a coin and moose antlers in the same day but there was still too much snow to be effective. But did find an old fly reel that rang up really good. Unless we get a thaw I am done until spring.

Nice antler shed, any plans for them besides the obvious to mount them.

Ah, THAT kind of sheds. When you mentioned cellars, I imagined small outbuilding-type sheds. ....Silly me! :tongue3:

I've seen cellar holes before but never got to fully excavate one and I wonder, are they all filled in with dirt or is there a hollow cavity down there?

We're in the middle of a whole lotta PRIME whitetail deer country, so I know what sheds are. I just wasn't connecting "deer sheds" with cellars. :laughing7:

There are several of the deer family that lose their antlers and have to grow them back every year. Whitetail and mule deer, elk, moose, and I believe also caribou. However, for some of these, only the males grow antlers - for caribou (aka: reindeer), it's both male and female.

Sorry, went a little off-topic for a moment.

Nice score. I like finding sheds also. Just never found any Moose sheds, as I haven't spotted any Moose in Illinois yet !

What do you use them for?

Decorative use, I guess. Finding a pair of shed antlers isn't a common find. I spend hundreds of hours in the woods every winter, but haven't even found a single deer antler.

They can also sell for a lot of money, which is why I'm always on the lookout for them:

Hello gold_panner,
Sheds are cool, but I'm more interested in the old fishing reel. As Back-of-the-boat asked, is there a manufacturer's name? Usually all you see is the size stamped 20-40-50 etc., which is the amount of yardage of line the spool can hold. Does it still have the crank? From the side you are showing it is in fairly good shape. I have a few of these, and in that condition they are $10-40 on ebay, with special ones going for much more. Nice find! ($10!)
