Great find. Check it close. The 1873 came in both the closed and open 3 variety. 390,000 minted with Closed 3 and 783,000 minted with Open 3

That should be silver if it's a 3 cent piece/trime.

The silver three cent piece, or trime was a different coin, actually minted before the copper/nickel three cent coin.

Woah! Nice coin, I have only seen a few posted. I have found a 2 cent piece, but those are way more common to find than 3 cent pieces, they didn't see as much circulation.

No, they made them out of nickel and silver.

If it is silver it is a trime.

If it is made of nickel I think it is called a Trickle?
