I headed off to an old spot I had not been to in a while. Brought my buddy Bartek and we both had some good success. I dug a great 1802 large cent. With the crud thickness I thought it was a liberty cap but no such luck. Enjoy

I would love to know how you cleaned up the draped bust. I just dug one last night and would like to be able to clean it up more, so that it looks as good as yours. Please let me know how you cleaned that coin so nice.

It's really what kind of ground the coin was sitting in. In this case there was mostly scale on the coin so 95% was with a toothpick. Scroll down to OutdoorAdv's comment and you can see pictures I took of the progress in a Gif.

Most of my large coppers are in rough shape. Of the many I've dug, about a half dozen look nice. This being probably my nicest.

Hi Scrappy; I wish it was the Die Break Variety. It is not. Yours is the Normal Reverse. There are 4 different Reverses.
They are : Values:VF-20 ACTUAL VALUES:
1802 - Normal Reverse $350 $225 - $275
1802 - Fraction 1/000 Reverse $600
1802 - Stemless Wreath Reverse $450
1802 - Die Crack Reverse $37K

Those are the Values as Listed in the Yeoman Red Book ok. Values in the Red Book are about 25% above actual Current Values so you have to adjust them ok. Check the other one. If it is the Die Break Variety you will see the Break located at the Bottom Right hand side from about the I in America to the Stem & Rim there ok. Good Luck. Nice Find. PEACE:RONB

Thanks for looking at that Barker. Cheers!

Killer hunt man! That DBLC is fantastic and probably one of the best dug ones I've seen. Those brass keys are also awesome... some of my favorite things to dig. I also REALLY like the wooden handle knife with those pewter or lead inlays. The wood handles I've dug have become brittle and fallen apart, so I started to preserve them with polyurethane. You'll want to clean it and dry the wood out really well... then I put some polyurethane in a zip lock bag... enough to cover the wood handle and I drop it in there for a few hours or day with the bag closed and no air in there. The wood will absorb the poly. Pull it out and let it dry. It'll make the brittle wood nice and hard so it wont fall apart over the years.

Great hunt man. :occasion14:

Haha. I didn't mention that knife to you or in my post just to see if anybody picked up on it. Secretly I predicted you would! It's a great handle and has some age. Any ideas?

You seem to get your coil over something nice every time you turn on your detector. Nice looking copper!

That is one heck of a coin Steve. I can't get over the shape it's in. You must have been digging in the woods and not a field. That would have had me doing backflips!!

Thanks Bills Like we've discussed, it can appear that way on Tnet when we only report the good;) I've most certainly failed many more times than I've succeeded. One of these days Brad and I are going South to bug Joey and it would be great to see you.

Thanks Bro. My best Draped was an 1802 before this one. Maybe it was a year that had better planchets? And yeah, winter hunts are a bonus, and my heating bill is way down. That means extra $$$ for a trip in the Spring.

That's real strange. It was on the same farm I found two absolutely roached state coppers and more ugly large cents. It was literally wedged between foundation stone rubble so it was in better dirt I suppose. A mystery! Lol

Glad to see you had another successful hunt with Bart. Not only did you dig some cool coins, but I like those old keys and thimble. What was the average depth of your finds? Were you swinging the CTX?

Thx Loco. I was swinging the Deus. It was a mixed grill with heavy iron so anywhere from 1" to 6" deep.
