Here's one of two 4 Maravedis coins made in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) between 1516-1556. Although in poor condition, I am so excited to have found such an ancient piece of local history. I can still make out several of the markings although the outer ring of text is missing. These are among the first coins ever made in the New World (Hispaniola). Found yesterday morning, 1/17/17, and finally identified last night after extensive research and digging through online photos. So excited and optimistic that there will be more old coins and relics to find over time.
