This post is a combination of 2 solo hunts. Friday Cru'Dad tried for less than 3 hours a field that turned up nothing better than a couple of buttons & a modern padlock. Today I did 4 hours on a piece of set-a-side that's at the base of a hill near a Roman Site.

I had;
A Leather Mount
Jaw Harp
Nice Medieval French Jetton
My star find that I thought was a piece of molten silver until I clean it, turned out to be a High Status Medieval Silver-Gilt Pilgrims Badge of St George & the Dragon. (the dragon has broken of) This is a pretty rare find because most were made of Lead or Pewter.
See more info of a similar complete example;

Now thats a find, rare and especially when thinking the St. Georges cult become common in medieval times and is still in use! St. George is the patron saint for the firefighters here. The St. Georges cross became the flag of England, St. George is the patron of the hiker, field hands and the diggers so to me you can clearly say it's the patron of a metal detectorist too as long as you believe in that. But why are the good finds broken ???

Hey Cru,

Here's one I found in Essex about 5 years ago, was disclaimed, treasure report said 15th century silver statue3.jpg statue3f.jpg Medieval figure of knight missing arms and feet with pose that represent St. George spearing the dragon, different that it was cast in round unlike pilgrim badges, reverse has remains of loop used for stitching or suspension, 18 mm width 9mm

Very nice selection of finds Cru. The pilgrim badge is quite an awesome find. At first glance it looks like molten silver - nice save!

Being cast in the round makes me think it's not a Pilgrim's Badge. The BM don't know it all & without the whole piece, I think they best guess. Although I don't have a better theory either!

Yeap, it's rarer to get these thicker earlier types. (It's a type I need as well)

I wonder if it was sewn onto a hat, but generally the pewter types were on the breast area.

If it were complete, it may have been banner worthy, but in my opinion its not quite there. Still, I came away thinking I had a slow day, until the clean up!

Is there an acronym for finds during cleanup?

UPDATE;

Its a long process but we are finally at the provisional valuation stage prior to the siting of the final valuation committee.

As a local Museum wishes to acquire it, they will pay us (50/50 with farmer) the final valuation, but for now its been valued at £60-80. Not a lot for a high statue piece, but it is what it is!
