What happens when 18 inches of snow melts in a few days? The ground gets REALLY saturated and the old coins start to pop up! It was 65 today and most of the snow was history, so I headed for one of my old spots. This spot has given up a 1798 LC, an 1864 two cent piece and 3 IHC's from the 1860's. Plus a few musket balls to boot.

Unfortunately, my reward for two hours of muddy detecting was a whopping 14 cents in clad! But my very last find made up for it. It was around 9 inches down and rang up as an 85. I was thinking LC or maybe a silver quarter, but it turned out to be a token. I dipped it in a puddle to clean it up, but I still couldn't read what was on it. So I put it in my Altoids mint box and decided to call it a day.

Long story short, it ended up being a trade token from 1833! A Robinson's Jones & Co token from Attleboro, Massachusetts. My oldest token by about 100 years! Not a really rare token, but I'll bet not too many have been dug up over the years.

Here's a few pics. I didn't clean it up much because I didn't want to mess with a 184 year old token! It's in pretty good shape, though.

Thanks! Can't believe how fast the snow disappeared and the ground thawed. A lot colder this morning, but still not bad. Another good day to go metal detecting!

It's not often you can pull a dated token. That one's a keeper for sure.

Thanks, Mike! I found mine in Glocester at a field I've done at least 20 times! Hard to believe I missed this huge token that many times, but it was very deep. Nothing brings out those old coppers better than saturated ground. HH.

Very cool toke, especially since it's for a button manufacturer. I found an 1836 R & W Robinson token. Here's mine along with a picture of a non-dug one.
