I just dug my first early gold ring and am one happy relic hunter! My buddy and I just went to a couple of different sites where we detected and sifted. I scored the gold ring early on at a shallow depth of maybe 4 inches. I am trying to use the makers mark to figure out when it was made. I really hope it is from the 1700s :icon_thumleft:. Any help on the maker would be appreciated! The inscription reads : "Remember the giver".

Sweet old gold, banner vote on the way for sure. The pipe bowl seems before 1800. Was it your first visit on this site? Congrats and go back asap ;)
Yes the pipe is before 1800 for sure as i have found them whole scuba diving and researched them a good bit. This was not my first trip to this site.

I have personally found some 18th century items with only a makers mark and other 18th century items with a series of hall marks. I dont know if silversmiths were also goldsmiths-----this is to respond to Stef45 post.

Value = IMO... $1000 - $1200. U.S.

In case you were wondering.

Again... IMO.

If he gets a matching posy prose and makers mark from the museums (even from two different rings) might be nearer to this one where they are asking $6,000.

Seems most of these, if confirmed by British Museum or London Museum or both avg. 5 to 8k asking price.

Here is one... British Museum - posy ring

If the link did not work, the British Museum has one in database with museum number: AF.1369

That's good enough for me. You've done very well. I rarely vote banner. I'm feeling rare in the USA. Vote in, Sir. :thumb_up:

These things only sell in the US for big $, usually. Some people desire authentic unique wedding rings and these are growing in popularity for that purpose. The Brittish tend to pay little in comparison. It's a growing US fad driving up price via demand.

A posy ring from the 17th or 18th century? Wow. A simply fantastic find and deserving of banner recognition.

What's the story on that one?

Has it's maker been identified?

Link? 8-)

That is an example that poster AARC found online. My ring has a very similar makers mark but its different i think. After seeing the British Museum example and others online, I am very sure mine is 18th century. Some other very experienced relic hunters on here also think its 18th century which makes me very happy. I also wanted to thank you for the banner vote and your help in gathering info. I really appreciate it!

I voted banner. Nice old gold ring and I am sure there is a hidden and fascinating tale behind it.
