I found a great new place to hunt in today. It's a 100' foot X 50' foot island out in the middle of the street. It's surrounded by houses that look like they were built in the 1930's. Within the first hour I dug out 2 clad Kennedy half dollars which was kind of weird, they were 20 feet apart.

After about 2 hours I dug something that really surprised me. At 4 inches in depth out pops a 1935-S walking liberty half dollar! Another hour of hunting goes by before I dig a silver dime, it was a 1954-S Roosevelt. About 15 minutes after the silver dime one of the guys that live in one of the houses near the island tells me that I have to stop digging and that I have to leave. He was a big Italian guy with a New York accent, so I did not argue with him. :tongue3: He looked like one of the Sopranos:laughing7:!

I was almost done with the island anyway, I covered it pretty well for 3 hours of hunting digging out 43 coins. Walking liberty half dollars a hard to find. Since starting this madness I've dug 22 now.

Nice finds! I would have walked over to him, introduced myself and after some chit chat I would have asked him if I could detect his yard. Most people can be swayed if you take the right approach and say the right things.

Nice Recovery GHF. You got a heck of a lot more time than I did on that island.
Several years ago me and a buddy were hunting that site early one morning. My friend is pulling wheats out within minutes of us starting. After about ten minutes of hunting I hear the sound of a Harley Davidson start and idle for another five minutes. Soon after I see and hear a SFPD moto cop pull up and motion to my buddy. After a few minutes of conversation my friend walks over to me and says we have to go. The officer was kind, but said we were not allowed to dig inside of that neighborhood due to homeowner association rules. The cop was a big dude, I didn't hear him talk but my guess is that it's the same person.

SF has at least 10 islands very similar to the one I just hunted all over the city. I thought I had hunted all of them until I found this one on google maps a few days ago.

Years ago I had a metal detecting hunting partner who was retired SFPD, he still carried his badge when we went out hunting in the city. When those busy bodies would show up and cause trouble he would show his badge! Wish he was still in the hobby....:(..Send me a PM and we'll see if its the same spot.

Oh I wish I were with you when that (expletive) New York (expletive) came out to talk (expletive). I would have told him I would cram my metal detector up his (expletive) so deep that I would have to hold him by his feet and detect with his fat (expletive) head.

Nice digs!

Isn't it illegal for a retired cop to impersonate an active duty cop ?
I realize they may still carry some prestige and have some pull, but their badge flashing days of authority are over, doesn't seem like a very wise thing to do.

He had retired active duty SFPD but was still a hand gun instructor on the force, this enabled him to lawfully still carry his badge.

Great finds! We have a few smaller islands like that around here, and I've considered hitting them. How is the trash? I would think there would be a ton of trash.
