Went back to the spot that gave up an 1833 hard times token a couple of weeks back. Really wet and muddy, so I was hoping for some deep coins. Only got 1 coin in an hour of detecting, but it's a good one. Looks to be an 1866 or 1867 shield nickel, my first one! Thanks to PinFire for that ID by pointing out the rays on the reverse!

This boy was deep! Rang up as a 53 and 8 inches down, so I knew I had to dig it. It ended up being a good 10 inches down and probably more than that. Came out of the ground toasted and muddy, so I had to rinse it in a puddle to figure out what it was. I can't believe I found a shield nickel before finding a V nickel. Weird!

Congrats on the shield. :occasion14: They are scarce around my neck of the woods. Your's is in the same conditions as mine. I could not get a good date off the one I dug.

Great find on the bucket list shield nickel. That's one I still need to notch off as well. Way to go down into the mud and pull that crusty piece of history back into the daylight. Excellent recovery mate. I was also tromping through a wet muddy field today but, only recovering garbage and one Memorial penny. Not going to submit a post for my efforts : ( Peace.

Well done, I found my first shield before a V too. Nothing is "weird" in this hobby.

Nice find! Since it is the variety with the "rays" between the stars, it dates to 1866 or 1867. You don't see Shields pop out of the ground very often!

Thanks guys! This spot gives me one good coin for every five hours of detecting! LOL! I guess it pays to be stubborn in this hobby...
