It is my objective to find at least one penny every day. That has been my motto for years.
I almost always do too....customers driveways, convenience stores, coinstars, even a road kill dime....if I see it, it's mine.
I noticed two cents along the edge of a walkway/thin mulch landscape....
Of all places, a fire station in the middle of a residential neighborhood....not more than 20 yrs old.
One cent was a Union Shield zincoln, already toasted...the other one had a bit more character....

Holy Crap!

1880 Indian Head!:headbang:

It's got an edge to it, my theory is a fellow found it in a coinstar reject tray, then subsequently lost it.

It's the oldest coin I've ever found without detecting.... Awesome.

I reckon some folks that don't know me think I'm "depressed" for always looking down into the turf scanning for lost artifacts : ) I have worked a lot of construction sights where I have I-balled old coins and tokens without my tector. Love just walking up and finding cool old stuff. Good job & good eye mate.

Congrats. The 1863 Civil war token penny in my avatar came from a coin reject tray. There are still oldies floating around, waiting for us. I like your penny a day habit, by the way.

Wow! I found a ran over 1956 wheat cent in a Wal-Mart parking lot and I thought that was insanely old for an eyeball find! Might be from a collector who bought it in a junk bin from his coin shop for 50 cents, put it in his pocket and lost it. I only ever found 2 in circulation.

Wow, an eyeballed injun in this day and age, and I thought I got lucky a couple weeks ago when in my junk mail I got a donation plea from UNICEF and in the envelope was a nice shiney 1935 Buffalo nickel (read the entire letter and no mention of that special treat)

Better in my opinion, the chances of finding a penny on the ground are pretty low. I find around 2 or 3 every mile I walk, in a city you could probably expect around 5 per mile. Based on my coin roll hunting data, and other peoples, 1:10 boxes will contain an Indian Head Cent. If you find 5 pennies per mile , that would mean that you would have to walk 5000 miles to find an Indian! Around the distance of walking from NYC to San Francisco and back, picking up every penny you see on the ground. That is also assuming that every mile stretch has an average of around 5 pennies, which I would guess would not be the case (like I said, I only find 2 or 3 per mile in my moderately populated town).

That's awesome to score an Indian Head without even having your detector out.
